I have a thing for challenges, so when i saw Tabulio level up challenge on twitter i got hooked instantly even though the challenge was over. The challenge task was to create an interactive resume generator that allows users create a resume fast and easy.

Thinking back to how my first attempt at creating a resume after high school went, I decided to hop on this challenge to create a solution that benefits job seekers.

Overview

CareerX is a resume generator app that allows users an ATS complaint resume fast and easy. The app would also help users improve their existing resume.

I developed the brand identity, UXR, UI and prototyping.

Design Process

I started my design process by drafting out a research plan to discover the problems of the users, i wanted to know what's working and what's not working currently.

The first step I took was to identify my users using the simple method "The user is a __ who wants to __. With this method i tailored down the users of a resume app to be:

Career persons who wants to improve their resume.
Students/Fresh graduates who wants to apply for their first job.

These were my target participants in the User research conducted.

Survey

After identifying the users, I created a user survey with the goal of identifying the users needs, goals and diffulties faced when creating a resume.

I analyzed my findings from the user survey carried out and these are the biggest insights:

83% edits their saved file when making updates.
Lack of proper words to use in their resume.
50% complained of bad UI.
No template sections based on role
Most users found it hard to write proper summary.

Competitive analysis

From the survey carried out, a few applications were mentioned. I used competitive analysis to analyze their strength, weaknesses and find opportunities to improve.

Strengths:

Does not require prior design skills.
Simple tools to create effective resume.

Weaknesses:

Limited templates in free version.
Lack resume information depth.

Opportunities/Solution

I gathered all the insights gotten from the user survey and competitive analysis and i brainstormed ideas. These were the solutions i came up with:

Expert recommendations for users based on their role.
Tips/Article section to aid the users in creating better resume
More ATS complaint templates that are grouped by style.
Documents stored within app for easy update/edition.
Import information from LinkedIn.

Conclusion

CareerX was really a challenge but a good and remarkable one. I found myself brainstorming and researching which helped sharpen my UX research skills.
